2012 Summer Show Auditions
Tuacahn Center for the Arts in beautiful Southern Utah (approx. 90 minutes northeast of Las Vegas) is casting our 2012 Broadway in the Desert Season featuring Disney’s Aladdin: The New Stage Musical and Hairspray.
ACTORS, SINGERS, & DANCERS:
Bring headshot and resume. Prepare 16 bars from a song in the style of the shows & have a second, contrasting song if requested. Selections from the shows permitted. Accompanist provided. No tapes or cds. Potential ensemble should attend a dance call. Actors invited to call backs will be provided with sides to read. Performers of all ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to attend. Men and women bring character, jazz, and tap shoes and attire appropriate for dancing and movement.
PLEASE NOTE:
Six month contracts: April 16 – October 20, 2012; some shorter contracts may be available. Because shows play in repertory, actors will be cast in both productions. *First rehearsal April 16 in Ivins, Utah (120 Miles Northeast of Las Vegas) * All roles available * All roles are understudied * Ensemble cast may also perform in the Tuacahn’s nightly pre-show * Earn EMC points with Actor’s Equity Association * During our season, cast members will receive a private audition with a major entertainment company * Shared housing available for a small fee.

DISNEY'S ALADDIN:
BABKAK: 20s, chubby, romantic desert dweller, part of Aladdin’s band; the “Crosby” of this Arabian “Road” picture, although perhaps with a bit more flair.
OMAR: 20s, nervous, diminutive desert dweller, part of Aladdin’s band; the “Lamour”.
KASSIM: 20s, tough (inside and out) desert dweller, part of Aladdin’s band; the “Hope”.
ALADDIN: 20s, clever, resourceful street urchin with a heart of gold; best friends with Babkak, Omar and Kassim; seeks a life beyond the confines of poverty.
JASMINE: 20s, intelligent young princess with insight beyond her years and station; seeks a life beyond the confines of privilege.
SULTAN: 50s, kind-hearted, widowed ruler of Agrabah; gets so caught up in following the law and tradition that he overlooks his daughter’s desires and gets swindled by his own vizie.
JAFAR: 50s, bitter, deep-voiced, rapier-tongued advisor to the Sultan; cannot tolerate idiots; always looking out for #1; the comedic villain of our story.
IAGO: 40s, dim-witted, classic-comedy lackey to Jafar.
GENIE: 30s-40s, quick-witted, fast-talking, ancient genie who knows all time and place; an old-school song-and-dance man.

HAIRSPRAY:
TRACY TURNBLAD: Female, Caucasian, to play high school age. Tracy is a "pleasantly plump" teenager, who dreams of fame and fights to racially integrate The Corny Collins Show. Strong pop belt singer and great mover.
EDNA TURNBLAD: Male to play female, Caucasian, 40s 50s. Tracy's kind, plus-sized mother Edna runs a laundry business out of her home. Needs a funny, grand character actor with singing ability who can convincingly play a woman.
LINK LARKIN: Male, Caucasian, to play high school age. Link is a teenage heartthrob and one of The Corny Collins Show Council Members, who falls in love with Tracy. Link is a strong pop singer and great mover.
SEAWEED J. STUBBS: Male, African American, to play high school age. Seaweed is a hip "Negro Day" dancer and the son of Motormouth Maybelle who falls in love with Penny. Seaweed is a strong, soulful tenor pop singer and great mover.
AMBER VON TUSSLE: Female, Caucasian, to play high school age. Amber is a bratty, selfish resident princess of The Corny Collins Show, despite her lack of talent. She is willing to do anything to win the Miss Teenage Hairspray pageant. She is a strong pop belt singer and great mover.
PENNY PINGLETON: Female, Caucasian, to play high school age. Penny is Tracy's slightly dorky, devoted and perky best friend. She is strong pop belt singer and mover.
CORNY COLLINS: Male, Caucasian, 30s. Corny is the eccentric and cocky host of The Corny Collins Show, handsome, charming, engaging, and smooth. Strong pop singer.
MOTORMOUTH MAYBELLE: Female, African American, 40s 50s. Maybelle is the owner of a downtown record shop and the host of "Negro Day" on The Corny Collins Show, self-described as "big, blonde and beautiful.” Strong, soulful gospel/pop singer.
VELMA VON TUSSLE: Female, Caucasian, 40s 50s. Velma is Amber's scheming mother and producer of The Corny Collins Show, who pushes her daughter to seek the stardom that she never had. Good character singer.
LITTLE INEZ: Female, African‐American, to play early teens. Inez is Seaweed's younger sister, who tries to audition for The Corny Collins Show but is turned away because she is black, strong Broadway/pop singer and mover.
MALE AUTHORITY FIGURE: Male, Caucasian, 40s 50s. Mr. Pinky, owner of Mr. Pinky's Hefty Hideaway who gives Tracy and Edna a makeover, Principal of Patterson Park High School, and Mr. Harriman F. Spritzer, the President of Ultra Clutch Hairspray.
FEMALE AUTHORITY FIGURE: Female, Caucasian, 40s 50s. The Matron guarding The Big Dollhouse, the Gym Teacher, and Prudy Pingleton: Penny's overprotective and often close-minded mother.
THE COUNCIL: A group of teenage singers and dancers on The Corny Collins Show. They are: Brad, Tammy, Fender, Brenda, Sketch, IQ, and Lou Ann. Also part of the Council is Amber and Link.
SEAWEEDS PALS Male and female African American singers and dancers to play high school roles. They are: Gilbert, Stooie, Cindy Watkins, Lorraine, Duane, and Thad.
THE DYNAMITES: 3 sexy African‐American female singer/dancers inspired by the Supremes.
Should have glorious pop/gospel singing voices. Should move well. They are featured in the showstopper "Welcome to the '60s". ENSEMBLE
ENSEMBLE DANCERS WHO SING AND SINGERS WHO DANCE: Male and female dancers with strong pop singing voices and great personalities, to play high schoolers, to play various roles in the ensemble.
