July 2017

It’s hot out there!  Stay inside!  Stay hydrated!  Use sunscreen!  The thing about living in the desert is...during the summer, it gets hot. And July is the hottest month of the year in Las Vegas. And it's already been hot (120 degrees). July 1st, the temperature will be 111 degrees.  Did you know that if you leave your cell phone in the direct sun for even a short period of time, it will overheat and not work.

Death Valley had such a problem with people frying eggs on their sidewalks, that it is now illegal. The pavement is hot. You may have to rethink when and how you walk your dogs. If the pavement is too hot for you to walk on with your bare feet...then your dog will be burning the pads on its paws.

July is the national month for a lot of things...Air-Conditioning Appreciation Days, Bereaved Parents Month, Bioterrorism/Disaster Education and Awareness Month, Blueberries Month, Cell Phone Courtesy Month, Family Reunion Month, Hemochromatosis Screening Awareness Month, Herbal/Prescription Awareness Month, International Blondie and Deborah Harry Month, International Group B Strep Awareness Month, Lasagna Awareness Month, Baked Bean Month, Child-Centered Divorce Month, Culinary Arts Month, Doghouse Repairs Month, Grilling Month, Horseradish Month, Hot Dog Month, Ice Cream Month, Make a Difference to Children Month, Pickle Month, Picnic Month, Recreation and Parks Month, Share A Sunset With Your Lover Month, Wheelchair Beautification Month, Sandwich Generation Month, Smart Irrigation Month, Social Wellness Month, Tour de France Month, and Women's Motorcycle Month

There are some essentials that you will need in order to cope with the heat in the desert... sunscreen! Water—stay hydrated, (and try putting fruit in your water (oranges, raspberries, etc) to help with electrolytes,) and be sure to use lotion, and limit your time in the sun. The best place to be is inside a casino or a showroom. When the tourists are not inside; they'll be hanging out on the Strip suffering from heat exhaustion, or by the pool getting sun burnt. It's also a great time to really enjoy the summer nights.

With that out of the way, let's talk about fun stuff...the first week of July is packed with stuff, but will be dominated by two events; the Fourth of July, and the UFC Fight week.  Many people are making a 5-day weekend out of the celebration.

Our Independence Day is bigger and better here than just about anywhere else in the country. The entire valley is going to part of this celebration. Over a quarter of a million people are expected to be visiting here on the fourth, and if you are anywhere near, or in view of, the Strip you are in for an amazing fireworks display. There are events planned all over the city, and it will be almost impossible to miss. I would suggest seeking high ground...and watching the multiple displays that go out across the city.

The purchase of the "safe and sane" fireworks are legal in Clark County, the local fire departments are hoping that few indulge themselves. After having a long bout of no rain and hot weather, the fire alerts are on an all time high---there is a lot of fuel out there. Wildfires are the plague the southwest and no one wants the situation to be worsened by additional fires caused by fireworks. "Unsafe and Insane" fireworks are available outside of the county, and are supposed to be illegal in Clark County, but they are seen going off all over the city. The Fourth is the only holiday that makes me nervous...there are just too many accidents. Do everyone and yourself a favor---watch one of the planned displays.

The UFC International Fight Week will return to Las Vegas July 5-8, 2017. Since its inception, UFC International Fight Week has increased in size and activities, quickly establishing itself as the world's largest mixed martial arts celebration. The weeklong festival provides high-energy, all-star entertainment that the UFC is known to deliver and includes numerous diverse events providing something for everyone. Signature events such as UFC Fan Expo, an Official Pool Party with Octagon Girls® a free concert and Open Workouts will headline the weeklong schedule, with newer events such as Charity Bowling, and the Ulti-man 5K Race making their return. The celebration will culminate with a weekend of action-packed fights, including UFC 213 on July 8.

Summer just got hotter with the announcement of Las Vegas’ newest male revue, Men of the Strip, coming to Hard Rock Live this July. With a limited engagement of six performances, the multi-faceted all-male cabaret show is sure to heat things up on The Strip. Created by Emmy-nominated celebrity choreographer, Glenn Douglas Packard, Men of the Strip takes the art of seduction to a whole new level with the hottest male entertainers delivering the ultimate live adult entertainment experience.

Grab onto your golden, sequined coat tails and hold tight because the wonderfully chaotic world of The Miss Behave Gameshow, the greatest night out you never even knew you wanted, is coming to the Las Vegas Strip. This fast, feverish, frantic, frenetic, frenzied and just downright f***ing fun night of entertainment that will kick the dust off variety for good, opens at the recently-converted Back Room at Bally’s Las Vegas Friday, July 7.  Changing lives one game at a time in a show with no rules and where everyone’s a winner, The Miss Behave Gameshow is a one-stop-shop of an evening which will bring out the best and worst in us all with a host of prizes and variety acts - both occasionally of questionable quality - thrown in for good measure. This international comedy hit will entice audiences to step out of their comfort zone and immerse themselves into the sinful world before them. Guests will be pitted against other audience members in a series of challenges, some involving their phones.

Blondie with co-headliner Garbage: The Rage & Rapture Tour at The Pearl, July 8.

Comprised of singer-songwriter Debbie Harry, guitarist and co-writer Chris Stein, powerhouse drummer Clem Burke, and long-time band members bassist Leigh Foxx, guitarist Tommy Kessler and keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen, Blondie's chart-topping success, fearless spirit and rare longevity led to an induction into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, a NME Godlike Genius Award in 2014, a Q Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2016, and more than 40 million albums sold worldwide to date.

Super Summer Theatre announces its second show of the season, “In the Heights,” playing July 12 – 29 at the Spring Mountain State Park. Before there was the musical theater sensation “Hamilton,” its creator Lin-Manuel Miranda introduced Broadway to “In the Heights,” a universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood - a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music: salsa, soul and hip-hop. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.

The musical, which opened on Broadway in 2008, was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, winning four including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. It also won a GRAMMY Award for Best Musical Show Album and was nominated for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It has since toured across the U.S. and internationally.

It's so hot, from around Vegas:

-You notice your car overheating before you drive it.
-Your computer won't work unless it has its own AC blowing on it.
-Hot air balloons can't go up, because the air outside is hotter than the air inside.
-Airplanes can't land because the asphalt is too soft.
-You discover that it only takes two fingers to drive your car.
-The swans in the park come in "original recipe" and "extra crispy."
-Hotter water comes from the cold water tap than the hot one.
-The strawberries are ripe and the cab drivers are riper.
-Your pool water starts to boil in the sun.
-Pigs complain about sweating like fat humans.
-A scalding hot shower still cools you down.
-You've been getting hot flashes, and you're a man.
-People walking down the sidewalk spontaneously burst into flames.
-A $20 surcharge is added to your bill when you eat at air-conditioned restaurants.
-The politicians take their hands out of your pockets to fan themselves.
-You need a spatula to remove your clothing.
-When the beer gut and big butt don't keep you from wearing shorts.
-You wish you had gotten the cloth seats instead of leather.
-You ask your boss for extra work so you can be in the air conditioning as much as possible.

There is a lot of great entertainment this month...
