November 2016

November in Las Vegas is a wonderful time—good cheer and good weather abounds throughout the city. Convention business is bustling with several monster conventions coming into town that have a couple of hundred thousand attendees. Holiday shows are starting to appear all over the city. Thanksgiving is just around the corner…and has become a major event in town. A lot of people take advantage of the long weekend and spend extra time in Vegas, and most restaurants have Thanksgiving offerings and specials, which will rival even the finest of home cooked meals. Las Vegas wants your business and has a lot of offer. Many of the Hotels are offering outrageous deals for you to come and stay here. And the best news of all…the election is almost over!!

November 8th, we choose a new President (and Senators and Congressmen, etc.)  The only good thing that I can say about this entire process is, Thank God it’s almost over.  If you haven’t voted yet, please do so.  All Americans need to be a part of this process…no matter how dysfunctional this campaign season has been.  Is this really the best that America has to offer?  I am often reminded of an old episode of the TV show, “South Park,” where Cartman and the boys have to elect a new school mascot, and the final choices are a Douchebag and a Shit Sandwich; and while everyone is disgusted by the choices, they have to pick one or the other.  Happy Election!

Thanksgiving is one of my most favorite holidays.  It’s a truly American holiday, and it’s all about friends, family, and just being thankful…and of course, there’s the food.

November 26, 1789 - The first American holiday occurred, proclaimed by President George Washington to be Thanksgiving Day, a day of prayer and public thanksgiving in gratitude for the successful establishment of the new American republic.

But the first Thanksgiving had its roots in September 1620. A small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their religion in the New World. After a treacherous crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth.  Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received a visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans. In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—the festival lasted for three days.

November is the month for: Child Safety Protection, Adoption Awareness, Epilepsy, Model Railroads, Native American Heritage, Peanut Butter Lovers, and Sleep Comfort.

Here are the interesting days…the 1st is All Saints Day, and the 2nd is All Soul's Day.  The third is Housewife's Day, the 4th is King Tut Day; the 5th is Gunpowder Day, Guy Fawkes Day, and Men Make Dinner Day. The 6th is Marooned without a Compass Day and Saxophone Day. The 8th is Cook Something Bold Day and Election Day. The 9th is Chaos Never Dies Day - you've got that right. The 13th is Sadie Hawkins Day, the 18th Occult Day, the 20th Absurdity Day, Beautiful Day, and Universal Children's Day, the 21st False Confession Day, the 24th is Thanksgiving!  And, it’s Evolution Day, and All Our Uncles are Monkeys Day. The 25th is Black Friday and Buy Nothing Day...does anyone abide by it!? It is also Pins and Needles Day and You're Welcome Day.  The 28th is Make Your Own Head Day and Red Planet Day, and finally, the 30th is Stay At Home Because You Are Well Day.

To keep folks up to date, I continue to work both in Dallas and Las Vegas…in Vegas, of course, I work on shows, reviews, photography, etc.; in Dallas, I’m working on the Dallas Christmas Parade—a huge event that takes most of the year to put together, and is the largest single day event in Texas.  On December 3rd at 10 a.m., we will roll out the parade that will include nearly 4,000 participants, 1,500 volunteers, 400,000+ people on the street watching the parade live, and then also filmed, televised, and syndicated to approximately 90 million households in 160 countries (it even plays in Las Vegas.)  It is one of the largest parades in the country.  This is a huge and glorious beast that will kick off the holiday season for Texas with more participants, more bands, and bigger floats than has ever been presented before…so I’ve been a bit preoccupied…

Turn your clocks back at 2:00 am on November 6th…Daylight savings time is over!

I hope that everyone has successfully survived the Vegas Halloween.  A friend of mine says that Halloween in Las Vegas is a full contact sport…so now, we can now officially start the Holiday Season!  Most stores have already put Christmas decorations up, and the ads for holiday merchandise have already been airing all over the place.

Nellis Air Force Base is proud to present to the Southern Nevada community the "75 Years of Airpower" air show and open house November 12th and 13th, 2016. Attendees will get to experience exciting aerial acts, an array of static displays from both the past and present, and have the chance to interact with the Airmen who carry out the Nellis mission. The Airmen at Nellis are excited for the chance to say "thank you" to the community for the incredible support they give our mission each day.  It’s the largest free public event in Nevada.  The Nellis Air Force Base Open House and annual Las Vegas air show. Aviation Nation celebrates the work of America's military and its achievements on land, at sea and in air, space and cyberspace. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the two-day event and are scheduled to be joined by several military air demonstration teams and some of the nation's top civilian air performers. The two-day event also depicts the history of American aviation and salutes the recent accomplishments of America's military in operations around the globe through numerous additional military and civilian ground displays. Approximately 100 aircraft covering everything from the earliest days of aviation to some of the nation's newest military aircraft are scheduled to be on display.

(This has always been one of my favorite events, and last year was cancelled.)

Opportunity Village…“The Magical Forest” opens November 19th and runs until January 1st. The Enchanted Carousel, the Forest Express Trains, live music, sweet treats, lavishly decorated trees, whimsical displays, millions of lights and visits with Santa Claus provide people of all ages with a winter wonderland each night during the holiday season.  This season hold a truly magical surprise with new exciting attractions and an expanded Magical Forest that Las Vegas has never seen before.  Opportunity Village is a not-for-profit organization that serves people with intellectual disabilities by providing them with vocational training, employment and social recreation services that make their lives more productive and interesting. Once thought by society to be unemployable and unimportant in the community, people with severe disabilities are engaged, active residents who contribute to our society. Through Opportunity Village’s programs and services, hundreds of people with disabilities are learning vocational skills and being placed in jobs throughout the community.  On a side note…Opportunity Village was the official manufacturer of Elvis’ scarves. They made the buttons that welcomed thousands of people to see “Elvis Live at the Hilton.” They also made the ribbons for the “hound dogs” that became popular trinkets of the King’s stay in Las Vegas.
