September 2016

September marks the transition into our next season…the start of school, the return to business, the end of summer and pool parties, and the promise of cooler days that will allow us to do more outside.  There is a lot of stuff going on this month.  It’s also time to change the watering schedule for the yard.

During the entire month of August, Dallas was consistently hotter than Las Vegas.  The parade here is moving forward, and I’m now ready for Christmas.  The kids of Clark County have already gone back to school, and with that of course, motorists need to be very aware of the school zones. The police are going to be out in force around schools.

Football season is here---which means that sports books across the city will be busy and happy, and thousands of football wives will be seeing shows, as thousands of football husbands are watching and betting on games.

There are some very fascinating national designations for September…I’ll highlight a few that I find the most interesting…

September 1st is National No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day. The First Friday in September is National Lazy Mom’s Day.  International Bacon Day is the Saturday before Labor Day, and September 15th is National Linguine Day, National Double Cheeseburger Day, and Google.com Day.  Interestingly, September 18th is National Cheeseburger Day (just a few days after Double Cheeseburger day.)  September 20th is National Punch Day and Wife Appreciation Day…is that just bad taste?  September 22nd is Hobbit Day, and the 23rd is Celebrate Bi-sexuality Day, and the Autumnal Equinox.  In spite of bad press the 26th is National Shamu the Whale Day and the 27th is National Corned Beef Hash Day.  And one of my favorites…September 30th is Blasphemy Day.

We have Labor Day, Mexican Independence, and the fifteenth anniversary of September 11th will make all of us stop for just a little while and remember.

Can you believe that it has been fifteen years since the tragedy of September 11th? It is another day that will live in infamy... Our lives and even how we live have been changed because of it. I will be flying my flag on that day and taking time to remember the heroes, the horror, the evil, and the strength that was brought about because of all of those events.

Olympia Weekend, the most prestigious event in the world of bodybuilding, returns to the Orleans Arena September 15 – 18; though many of the events will be at the Las Vegas Convention Center.  Joe Weider's Olympia Fitness & Performance Weekend is a bodybuilding competition sanctioned by the International Federation of Bodybuilders Professional League (IFBB Pro League). Past champions include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lee Haney, and Ronnie Coleman. This prestigious event is one of the highest accolades in the sport of professional bodybuilding.

For the seventh year in a row, beer lovers are invited to the Golden Nugget Las Vegas' annual Beerfest weekend event Sept. 17-18. Guests will be able to gather for the premier beer festival of the season in Downtown Las Vegas, and sample award-winning breweries paired with beer-inspired bites and live entertainment throughout the weekend. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Animal Foundation.

Selling out in only its second year, Route 91 Harvest has quickly become a country music calendar staple and will return to Las Vegas for a third time with heavyweights Luke Bryan, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Little Big Town, Chris Young and more leading the charge.  Set to take place at the Las Vegas Village across from Luxor Hotel and Casino September 30 – October 2.

The Australian Pink Floyd Show brings their impressive live performance to The Pearl Concert Theater inside Palms Casino Resort on Sept. 3, 2016 at 8 p.m.  After three years of touring the world with album-themed tours, The Australian Pink Floyd Show returns with a new set of Pink Floyd songs – ‘The Best of the Best.’ This time the band wanted to be able to cover a wider range of material to present a well-balanced set that is truly representative of Pink Floyd's work over the years. They’ve even created a special app that can be downloaded at aussiefloyd.com that enables fans to put together a set list with all the songs they would like to hear. The band has used some of the results from that to put together the current set list that covers all of the greatest and most requested songs, as well as some more interesting songs from the early Syd Barrett years, Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut, Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell. There should be something in there to please all kinds of Pink Floyd fans.
