August 2022

This is the 22nd year anniversary of this newsletter. With both the entertainment news and show reviews, my goal has been to let people know what to expect when they come to town or want to go to a show. I am proud to have been able to bring you the news of what is happening in Las Vegas entertainment, and I look forward to the years to come.

August is a relatively slow month in Vegas…well; it’s just too damn hot!  July is recorded as the hottest month of the year, but it is so dry that you don’t really feel it.  August is monsoon season…so we get a lot of afternoon thunderstorms…which adds a lot of humidity to the air…so it feels a lot worse than July.  Most of the entertainment announcements in August are for productions that are months away.

Most of Vegas is open…most of the shows are open.  We’re still in a world that we can’t count on.

August is the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar and its predecessor, the Julian calendar. The month of August was originally named Sextilis in Latin since it was the sixth month in the ancient Roman calendar. It became the eighth month with a length of 29 days around 700 BCE when January and February were added to the year. Julius Caesar added two days to the month around 45 BCE. It was later renamed to honor Augustus Caesar in 8 BCE. It is considered the busiest time for tourism because it falls in the main school summer holiday period. Its birth flower is the gladiolus or poppy which represents beauty, strength, love, marriage and family. The birthstone for August is the peridot or onyx.

In 1982, Billy embarked on a remarkable transatlantic/transgenre solo career that integrated clubland throb, wide-screen depth and drama, rockabilly desperation, the bold and simple lines of punk, and rock’n’roll decadence.

Serving as conductor and curator for this myriad of arts and culture programming is Founding Creative Director Kip Kelly who recently revealed a few intriguing nuggets about The Rogers Foundation vision, the building's design, and what's to come for this new home of artistic and creative expression.

"The Beverly Theater was designed for maximum flexibility without compromising the integrity of each experience," said Kelly. "The theater can give filmgoers an authentic film watching experience and within hours, also give fans a true theatrical presentation of their favorite band or performer. There's additional area purposefully designed for intimate author and literary experiences. It's uncommon to have this much versatility in an arthouse theater."

Their searing guitars and a locomotive rhythm section sound as alive today as they did in '82, as do Ness' hard-luck tales of love, loss and lessons learned.
