CTFD – Career Transition for Dancers is a resource for any professional dancer looking to make a change out of dancing and into another profession. I was invited to their 3 hour workshop which they held a week ago at the Nevada Ballet offices in Summerlin. I was amazed to hear how easy it is for a dancer to get free grant money (yes, you read it correctly – FREE grant money) to go back to school or apply toward starting your own business. Also, the organization offers free lifetime career counseling and guidance to all dancing professionals looking to transition out of dance and into other professions. This is a resource that every dancer needs to be aware of! Check out www.CareerTransition.org

Fantasy at Luxor – Last week was Press Night for the launch of Fantasy’s 2011 swimsuit calendar and to introduce their new re-choreographed show starring singing sensation Lorena Peril. Producer Anita Mann should really be proud of this new rendition of her popular adult topless show. Anita was very smart to snatch up Lorena after the demise of Sin City Bad Girls - where you will remember Lorena was the singing star in that previous show. As the only male in the cast, comedian/impressionist Sean E. Cooper adds a fun dose of hilarity to this great show. What could be better than a night out to see talented and beautiful topless dancers, an amazing singer, and a few laughs on the side? If you haven’t seen Fantasy – go check it out!

Interesting side note which I will save for monthly Entertainer Spotlight section on Lorena Peril, but our own Minnie Madden here at Callback News played a part in the career of Lorena Peril – more to come on that later!

Tower of Power at Southpoint – My friend Amanda wanted to go see Tower of Power this past weekend at Southpoint, so I pulled some strings and we went. I had no idea who they were – to me, with a name like Tower of Power; they sounded like a Christian band. I was surprised to find out that this is their 43rd year of performing and they were big back in the 70’s and 80’s – that was my era and I should have known who they were. Their blend of soul and jazz music is ‘tight’ for this ten piece band. I have never seen the showroom at Southpoint filled with such energy from audience members up dancing next to their chairs. I really had a good time.

Why did a similar group like Earth, Wind and Fire become such a household name when Tower of Power didn’t? This is another business lesson for all entertainers – that sometimes business marketing and management can mean more than talent. We see this all the time in the entertainment business. Watch for the announcement of an upcoming dynamic business marketing and branding seminar sponsored by Callback News just for entertainers. In this workshop, you will learn the principles of how to brand yourself and what it takes in business to make your career stand out. Details will be announced in a future column and posted on our website.

Thank you Southpoint! It is always a pleasure to go see shows at Michael Gaughan’s Southpoint Casino Resort. The entertainment staff of Damian, Carrie, and Pat always takes such good care of me.
