MARIO BASNER’S WORLD HERITAGE COLLECTION OPENS AT TIVOLI VILLAGE

The internationally celebrated World Heritage Collection by award winning photographer Mario Basner will be hosting a world premiere at Tivoli Village on Tuesday, Jan. 17 and will be open to the public for free through Feb. 28. The extraordinary collection celebrates diversity and culture by capturing evocative and moving images that explore the beauty of urban cityscapes and unique architectural structures.

For the series’ first installment, Basner takes guests on a visual journey through the history and humanity of an abandoned sanitarium found in Germany. Built in 1898 as a treatment center for tuberculosis, the hospital complex was the largest of its kind and a world leader in research and treatment. It included 60 buildings and park-like grounds amidst a scenic forest located one hour south of Berlin. The majority of the complex had been abandoned since 1994, but as of 2016, the site has been re-purposed and the buildings underwent a complete remodel. The images have historic relevance, capturing the final state of decay before all traces of history were painted over and disappeared forever.

Basner was born in Hamburg, Germany, and is renowned for the realism and depth in his photographs. After nurturing his artistic abilities in a 25-year music career and using photography as a creative outlet, he perfected his style and in recent years transitioned to the photography medium in order to fully express himself and his own vision. The World Heritage Collection constitutes the culmination of a life’s pursuit. To date his work has been recognized with 10 major international photography awards. Basner currently resides in Las Vegas.

BOULEVARD MALL CHANGES WITH THE TIMES

The Boulevard Mall located not far from the Strip at Maryland Parkway and Desert Inn opened on March 6, 1968, and was the first enclosed, climate-controlled shopping mall to open in Nevada. The retro single-story super-regional mall like other comparable shopping malls across the country is experiencing the challenge of changing with the times especially when huge anchor stores close. It’s been announced that the Macy’s store at The Boulevard Mall is among the 68 store closures taking place in this year. Future plans for the space are yet to be determined.

Back in 2008, the mall’s two-story anchor Dillard’s store closed and remained empty until a 28,000-square-foot Goodwill thrift store opened in October 2015, occupying part of the first floor of the old store. It was the first Goodwill store to open inside an enclosed shopping mall. A 60,000-square-foot John’s Incredible Pizza Company restaurant opened in December 2015, taking up the remainder of Dillard’s ground floor.

Last month, the 31,000-square-foot of interactive, educational hands-on SeaQuest Interactive Aquarium opened at the mall. Adding entertainment components is what many malls are incorporating to keep up with the times.

QUICK TIPS

The Pete Rose Sports Bar & Grill opened in October 2015 in the Hawaiian Marketplace shopping complex on the Strip. In August 2016, Rose’s name was removed from the restaurant’s signage and the restaurant was stripped of its baseball theme but floundered and closed anyway last year. Surprise, the dining replacement will be the Heart Attack Grill making it the restaurant company’s second location in Las Vegas with the first venue being downtown at Neonopolis. The Heart Attack Grill’s gimmick is customers must wear hospital gowns and waitresses are dressed as nurses. One of the restaurant’s signature offers is customers who weigh 350 pounds or more dine free.

While Journey will be at the Hard Rock in May, Lights – A Tribute to Journey show will appear in Rocks Lounge at the Red Rock Resort on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 4 and 6 p.m. The show features world-class musicians and singers, including players who have worked with and backed legendary artists including Celine Dion and David Foster.
