August 2016

This is the 16th year anniversary of this newsletter. With both the entertainment news and show reviews, my goal has been to let people know what to expect when they come to town or want to go to a show. I am proud to have been able to bring you the news of what is happening in Las Vegas entertainment, and I look forward to the years to come.

Lots of big shows are closing in the near future. There are no concrete plans to replace them yet, but I’m hopeful for some great new entertainment. Las Vegas weather in August sucks. It is monsoon season...so in addition to being horribly hot, there is a chance of thunderstorms...which adds an uncomfortable amount of humidity to the air. The best thing to do in Las Vegas in August is to be in a casino or a showroom.

August is the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar and its predecessor, the Julian calendar. The month of August was originally named Sextilis in Latin since it was the sixth month in the ancient Roman calendar. It became the eighth month with a length of 29 days around 700 BCE when January and February were added to the year. Julius Caesar added two days to the month around 45 BCE. It was later renamed to honor Augustus Caesar in 8 BCE. It is considered the busiest time for tourism because it falls in the main school summer holiday period. Its birth flower is the gladiolus or poppy which represents beauty, strength, love, marriage and family. The birthstone for August is the peridot or onyx.

The 2016 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, and commonly known as Rio 2016, will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 – 21, 2016. Rio will become the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics. These will be the first games to be held in a Portuguese-speaking country, the first to be held entirely during the host country's winter season (i.e. prior to the Southern Hemisphere's vernal equinox).

The Summer Olympic Games or the Games of the Olympiad were first held in 1896. Medals awarded in each event started in 1904. The Winter Olympic Games were created due to the success of the Summer Olympics. The Olympics have increased from a 42-event competition with fewer than 250 male competitors from 14 nations to a 300-event sporting celebration with over 10,000 competitors from 205 nations. Five countries – Greece, Australia, France, Great Britain and Switzerland – have been represented at all Summer Olympic Games. The only country to have won at least one gold medal at every Summer Olympic Games is Great Britain. The United States leads the all-time medal table.

Rio de Janeiro has Olympic-sized problems. Brazil is plagued by water pollution, a financial crisis, crime, body parts washing ashore (yes, you read that right), and a major health threat from the mosquito-borne Zika virus.

The MAGIC convention comes to town August 15th. This monster show kicks off the start of the fall convention season. The fall show of MAGIC will bring in over 85,000 people. The men's garment convention is always a popular and well-attended event. From its humble beginnings, it is now a huge convention that is in town, twice a year.

Jersey Boys is closing. Its final show is Sept. 18. The show closes after nearly 3,300 performances and a run exceeding eight years at two Strip hotels. "Raiding the Rock Vault" will ended its residency at The Tropicana Las Vegas on Sunday, July 31. The production performed at the property since 2014, when it relocated from Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino - formerly LVH - Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, where it was launched in 2013.

Showstoppers abruptly set a closing date of Sept. 30. This production had been inspired by some of the great numbers of Broadway. The timing of the show's announced closing date is something of a surprise as the production recently added "You're The One That I Want" from the film version of "Grease," and "New York, New York." That upgrade to the show was announced one month ago.

Legendary rockers Starship featuring Mickey Thomas are bringing their Starship Tour to Las Vegas for a special performance at The Railhead inside Boulder Station on Friday, August 12 at 8 p.m. Mickey Thomas joined Jefferson Starship in 1979. Mickey’s voice had become legendary after recording “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” with the Elvin Bishop Band and he was planning to pursue a solo career. In 1985, Starship released the album that would come to define the 1980s, Knee Deep in the Hoopla.
