May 2016

May is another one of those perfect months in Las Vegas. The weather is great. Entertainment is plentiful. School is almost out. The summer season is almost upon us, and the pool party schedule is active until September. There has been a lot of activity in the entertainment world with shows moving, opening and closing. May has always been an instrumental month for shows…especially new ones. Shows have to get established in May if they are going to survive in the summer.  If a show can survive the summer then they’ll usually do well in the busier fall season.

May 1st is of course May Day (initially started as another pagan spring festival pre-dating Christianity.)  Dancing around a pole might sound like a Vegas tradition, but there really aren’t a lot of maypole dancers out there.  In the late 19th Century, May Day was chosen as the date for International Workers' Day by the Socialists and Communists of the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago. In those countries that celebrate International Workers' Day, the day may also be referred to as "May Day" but it is a different celebration from the traditional May Day…just thought you should know.

May is a lot of things…it is Date Your Mate Month, National Barbecue Month, and National Blood Pressure Month.

May 1st is May Day!! …Which is celebrated in many countries as a traditional springtime festival or as an international day honoring workers.  It is also Mother Goose Day.

The 2nd is Baby Day and Brothers and Sisters Day. The 3rd is Lumpy Rug Day. May the Fourth, obviously, Star Wars Day, and Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for May the 5th. The 6th is International Tuba Day, National Tourist Appreciation Day, National Nurses Day, No Diet Day, and Space Day. The 7th is National Tourism Day and World Naked Gardening Day (There will be a lot of hoes out.) The 8th is a big day…it is Mother's Day, V-E Day, and No Socks Day…which is interesting because the 9th is Lost Sock Memorial Day. It is then followed on the 10th by Clean up Your Room Day. The 11th is Eat What You Want Day and Twilight Zone Day. And the 12th is Limerick Day (There once was…)

The first Friday the 13th of the year is always Blame Someone Else Day, and this Friday the 13th is unique because it’s the only one in 2016…the is also Leprechaun Day. The 14th is Dance Like a Chicken Day and National Train Day. The 16th is Love a Tree Day, National Sea Monkey Day, and Wear Purple for Peace Day. The 18th is No Dirty Dishes Day and Visit Your Relatives Day. The 20th is Be a Millionaire Day. The 21st is Armed Forces Day. The 22nd is Buy a Musical, Instrument Day, and World Goth Day,

The 23rd Lucky Penny Day; the 24th National Escargot Day, the 25th National Wine Day and Tap Dance Day, the 26th is Sally Ride Day, and the 27th is Sun Screen Day.

The 28th is Amnesty International Day, and International Jazz Day. The 29th is Learn About Composting Day. The 30th is Water a Flower Day. And finally, the 31st is Save Your Hearing Day.

Cinco de Mayo is a big celebration in Vegas.  Every bar and club will have Cinco de Mayo celebrations…Save water, drink a margarita. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.  In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16.

Remember that Mother's Day is on the 8th. If you're in town, there are several shows that will offer specials for you and your mother; every buffet and restaurant in the city is offering some sort of deal. Remember your Mother!

May 15th is the 111th Anniversary of the founding of the City of Las Vegas. No one really cares about this statistic. We had a great 100-year celebration, and we may have to wait for the 125 or 150-year mark to get the city to celebrate again.

Cirque du Soleil’s “Zarkana” closed on Saturday, April 30 at Aria. The announcement was made last year that the show would close so that the theater can be turned into a four-story 200,000-square-foot expansion to the resort’s convention center. Construction should begin in May and be done by Februrary 2018 for an estimated cost of $154 million.

Performances run Wednesday through Sunday beginning at 9:30 p.m.

The most provocative show on the Las Vegas Strip, X Burlesque, celebrates 14 years as the city’s hottest topless revue with the addition of sexy new dance numbers at Flamingo Las Vegas. Couples will soon be able to celebrate a crazy little thing called love at the new LOVE IT LOUD Rock & Roll Wedding Chapel at KISS® By Monster Mini Golf®. The new venue, opening May 19 inside Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, will set the stage for weddings, vow renewals and commitment ceremonies with an all-new stage, expanded lineup of rock n’ roll ministers, and wedding packages that make the big day a walk in Paradise City.

Auditions for Rock n’ Roll Impersonator Minister Roles to Be Held May 4

KISS By Monster Mini Golf is calling all rock n’ roll impersonators who “think they’re sexy” and “have the moves like Jagger” to “express themselves” during auditions to join the minister lineup for the LOVE IT LOUD Rock & Roll Wedding Chapel. The venue already has KISS impersonators covered, but is looking to add iconic rock n’ roll impersonators such as: Madonna, Prince, Mick Jagger, Cyndi Lauper, ZZ Top, Billy Idol, Elvis, Joan Jett, Twisted Sister, Steve Tyler, Axl Rose, and more.

Auditions will be held Wednesday, May 4 from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. on the Masquerade Stage at the Masquerade Village inside The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Applicants should come in costume, prepared to perform a mock wedding ceremony approx. 5 minutes in length.

KISS impersonators need not apply as those slots are already taken. Applicants do not have to be ordained, though ordained ministers will naturally have more opportunities. However, non-ordained ministers will be able to perform wedding vow renewals and non-legal binding ceremonies. For more information visit monsterminigolf.com/kiss.

Joan Jett is an originator, an innovator, and a visionary. As the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, with whom she has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she's had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock 'N' Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.”

The festival, held bi-annually in Las Vegas, NV, is one of the most popular festivals for locals and visitors from all over the world. Each festival expects to out-do the last, so don’t miss out on the best Italian Heritage Celebration this side of Naples!

Helldorado Days, this May 13th - 15th, is an outdoor community event celebrating Las Vegas' tribute to the Wild West and produced by the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge No.1468. Helldorado Days which began in 1935, is the longest running civic event in the history of Las Vegas, originally created as a means to encourage tourism to the city upon completion of the Boulder Dam. With over 40,000 people in attendance, Helldorado Days offers a 4-day pro rodeo, a parade, carnival, treasure hunt for gold, whiskerino contest, golf tournament, poker tournament, art show and auction, trail ride, exhibits and food. For 4 days Downtown Las Vegas is transformed into Helldorado Days as the event takes over several vacant downtown blocks and builds a rodeo arena and carnival from the ground up. Helldorado Days is a non-profit community event. The members of Elks Lodge No. 1468 are committed to assisting children and veterans in need and have given back over $75,000 in 2009 and over $4 million to the community since 1935. This year, Helldorado will (again) be staged in a prime location next to the Smith Center in Las Vegas’ rejuvenated downtown. The new rodeo grounds, in the surrounding area of the North East corner of Symphony Park Ave and Grand Central Parkway, will provide a much larger area for staging, parking, livestock, stands, vendors and bands. Foot traffic also is suspected to be significantly higher due to the proximity of attractions like the Smith Center, Symphony Park, Discovery Children’s Museum and various eateries and shops - not to mention the fantastic visibility of the rodeo grounds from the freeway.

When a man with money meets a man with experience; the man with experience leaves with money and the man with money leaves with experience.
