February 2016

February is a great month…it’s almost always beautiful out here. Lots of major events make February one of the best months of the year--- The Super Bowl, Valentine's Day, MAGIC, and the Chinese New Year.  February is the shortest month of the year, but it’s packed full. February is a busy time for conventions, and is always the start of new things as the city looks ahead to the summer. Late winter and early spring are good times to get shows opened so that they can establish themselves prior to the summer season. And, of course, we get to enjoy February one day longer…with Leap Day.

The Super Bowl…the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos…  In Las Vegas, we are not allowed to call the game, the “Super Bowl.” The NFL has a love/hate relationship with the city and will not allow the use of the name “Super Bowl.”  So all of the football parties for that day will be “The Big Game,” “The Championship,” and “The Super Party.”  And then there are the commercials…a lot of people’s favorite part of the game.

Some of the interesting days that occur in February are:  The 2nd is National Groundhog Day.  February 4 is National Thank a Mailman Day. February 5 is National Shower with a Friend Day. The 7th is National Periodic Table Day.  The 8th is National Kite Flying Day.  The 11th is National Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk day.  February 17 is National Random Acts of Kindness Day, and the 29th is Leap Day.  Also February is An Affair to Remember Month, and the 3rd Week of the month is International Flirting Week.

2016 is the 4713th Chinese Year. According to Chinese Horoscope calendar, the first day of Red Monkey is on February 4, 2016. This day is not the Chinese New Year Day. Most of Internet Chinese horoscope sites use Chinese New Year Day to determine the Chinese zodiac sign, which is wrong. Chinese New Year Day of Red Monkey Year is on February 8, 2016. Monkey Horoscope 2016 predicts that you will have Divine help during the first five months of 2016. Prospects for development of your life are bright and you should use your capabilities and optimism to the full advantage.  You should be determined to get things done, while you should be friendly with your colleagues to get their support. All obstacles to your growth will be overcome by your realistic approach in the Year of the Red Fire Monkey.

MAGIC is in town the 16th – 18th to introduce the spring fashions. MAGIC is one of the biggest conventions of the year with nearly 100k attendees...but in addition to this convention; there are also a couple of hundred other conventions that hit the city this month.  MAGIC is the world's largest fashion marketplace, comprised of ten unique communities showcasing the latest in apparel, footwear, accessories, and manufacturing. Every February and August the retail industry convenes in Las Vegas to spot and shop the latest trends in men’s, women’s, juniors' and children’s apparel, footwear, and accessories.

February 14th falls on a Sunday this year, and Monday is President’s Day…which means a three-day weekend.  Valentine’s should be great as usual.  Every chapel will be filled to capacity from dawn until the stroke of midnight.  Normally, Las Vegas hosts nearly 10,000 weddings per month; the anticipation is that this year, Las Vegas could host 10,000 weddings on just that day.  If you haven’t booked a time yet…good luck.  This feels like the perfect set of circumstances to generate a lot of business.  It should be a great day.

Time for a tirade…and be warned…I curse a lot in the next paragraph.  If you’re offended by that, you might want to skip the next section.

Bean Counters…(bookkeepers and accountants) are (and have been) ruining the Las Vegas Casino experience.  I imagine them as greedy little goblins huddled together in their own little Gringotts world working diligently to find another way to fleece their guests out of a few more dollars.  Now, MGM is going to start charging for parking.  Fuck you, MGM…how dare you.  And fuck the MGM PR department for trying to sell this change as something that’s positive for the guests. No.  It is not going to “enhance” the guest experience.  I call bullshit.  Your greedy goblins are just trying to get a few more bucks.  And yes, it may be less expensive than parking in other major cities, but for the past 20 years, whenever I have gone to another major city, I curse the fact that I have to pay for parking… Vegas had always gotten it right…until now.  Bean Counters are the main reason that casinos got out of the entertainment business.  They are the main reason that Las Vegas is no longer a place that you can get great deals on food and shows.  The goblins only see revenue sources.  And apparently, MGM is overrun with them.  All of their properties are going to start charging for parking…which, of course, opens up the possibility for other casinos to do the same.  I hate the bean counters.  And for the foreseeable future, I have no need to go to any MGM property.  I have plenty of other choices for food, gambling, and shows.

Vegas’ favorite hometown rockers, Sin City Sinners, will release Let It Burn, their long-awaited album of all original material on Sunday, Feb. 14. In true Sinners style, the band will host a special “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” performance and album release party at Count’s Vamp’d Rock Bar & Grill that evening.  Let It Burn is the band’s sixth album, debuting six years to the day they released their first album, Exile On Fremont Street. Recorded at Hit Track Studios in Cedar City, UT and mixed and mastered at Hit Track Studios in Las Vegas, Let It Burn showcases the band’s solid musicianship, blending explosive rock, rhythm and power pop.  Each track was inspired by personal experience, exploring themes of relationships, love, loss and life.

The annual Pahrump Hot Air Balloon Festival is back this February 26 – 28, with dozens of colorful hot air balloons to fill the Pahrump skies. The three-day family-friendly festival will bring together more than 20 hot air balloon pilots from the western states, music, entertainment, tasty bites and arts and crafts for all ages to enjoy. Guests will have the opportunity throughout the weekend to experience an adventure at new heights on beautifully designed hot air balloons. There will be a spectacular Balloon Glow Light Show that will light up the sky for miles on Friday and Saturday night. Admission to the festival is free, guests can purchase tethered balloon rides for $10 and a wristband for the carnival for $20.  For more information on the Pahrump Hot Air Balloon Festival or to book a hotel room, please visit www.visitpahrump.com/events.

The Plaza Hotel & Casino is proud to announce that Las Vegas’ first family of entertainment, the Scintas, will bring their legendary and critically acclaimed music and comedy show to the property’s iconic showroom for a limited engagement beginning Friday, Feb. 19.  The Scintas will perform at the Plaza at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 19, 20, 26 and 27, Mar. 11, 12, 25 and 26, Apr. 8, 9, 15 and 16, and May 6, 7, 13 and 14.  The Scintas, brothers Frankie and Joe, “honorary Scinta” Peter O’Donnell and newest addition, Janien Valentine, bring refreshing wit, great music and endless talent to the highly regarded show. Having performed for hundreds of thousands of people over the years, the Scintas have become a fixture in Las Vegas for the past 16 years with their signature comedy, musical prowess, and knack for spot-on impressions. Valentine adds to the dynamic of this talented group with her powerful vocals and her ability to match wits with the boys.

On Thursday, Feb. 4, the Museum of Gaming History (MOGH), a not-for-profit, educational project of The Casino Chip & Gaming Token Collectors Club, Inc., will open its “Union Plaza Then and Now” exhibit. The exhibit will be free to the public and will contain artifacts from when the hotel/casino first opened through the last five decades. The exhibit will have about 150-200 items including chips, tokens, dice, ashtrays, post cards and numerous other branded artifacts, as well as a light box display of a rare slot glass collection. The exhibition will also include a wall of photographs spanning the Plaza’s history from its groundbreaking to current day prominence and a 30-minute video about the Plaza’s place in the historic development of downtown Las Vegas.

Superstar vocal group Rascal Flatts announced that season nine finalist of NBC’s “The Voice” Barrett Baber will join the trio on their Rascal Flatts Rhythm & Roots residency at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. The nine-show run takes place at the award-winning music venue from Wednesday, February 17 to Saturday, March 5.

The Shirelles, credited for originating the iconic girl-group sound of the ‘60s, will return to the M Resort on Saturday, Feb. 13. Starring Beverly Lee, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group will perform a selection of legendary love songs and popular hits including “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “Dedicated To The One I Love,” “Mama Said,” “Soldier Boy,” “Baby It’s You,” and “I Met Him On A Sunday.”  The Shirelles formed in 1957 when a group of four teenage classmates entered into their high school talent show. They performed an original song, “I Met Him On A Sunday,” which was a huge success, ranking on Billboard’s Top 100 chart. They went on to record several Billboard Top 20 hits and were named Best Female Vocal Group for five consecutive years by Billboard Magazine. Additionally, the group received the Soul of America Music Award and the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, in addition to their 1996 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone named The Shirelles one of the 100 best acts of all time, selecting two of their songs, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "Tonight's the Night", on its list of the greatest songs of all time.

Live Nation Las Vegas and Danny Zelisko Presents are proud to announce that legendary rockers AC/DC are coming to MGM Grand Garden Area Friday, Feb. 5, 2016.  The Rock or Bust World Tour comes after a massive year for the band, with AC/DC kicking off the 57th annual Grammy Awards, headlining at Coachella, and completing 17 shows in Europe, 14 shows in North America and 11 shows in Australia/New Zealand.

M Resort Spa Casino will commemorate the Year of the Monkey with a Chinese New Year celebration to include dragon and lion dances, festive decorations and special menu items. On Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, at 5 p.m., the Forbes Four-Star resort will host a traditional good luck Chinese dragon and lion dance. Performed by the Lohan School of Shaolin, a team of 30 dancers will perform the traditional ceremony to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune as they animate a 63-foot dragon with graceful, undulating movements. The assembly, which will also include adult and baby lion dancers, happy Buddhas, musicians and festive flags, will parade throughout the casino, beginning and ending in the hotel lobby with a traditional performance.

Country music legend Ronnie Milsap will bring his farewell tour to the spacious Grand Events Center inside Green Valley Ranch Resort on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 8 p.m. With several performances at Station Casinos’ properties throughout his more than 50 years in the music industry, the multi Grammy Award-winning Milsap chose Green Valley Ranch Resort for his final performance in Las Vegas. Milsap had been living music almost from the start. Born in Robbinsville, North Carolina, at the edge of the Smoky Mountains, he was enveloped in his early years by country – the region was crucial to such history-makers as Jimmie Rodgers, Chet Atkins and Dolly Parton. Milsap subsequently received classical training at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, though he notoriously frustrated his teachers by banging out Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard rock & roll on the keyboard when he was supposed to be practicing Mozart and Beethoven.

The 1st Oscar ceremony was held on Thursday, May 16, 1929, at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood to honor outstanding film achievements of 1927/28. It was hosted by actor Douglas Fairbanks. The 88th Academy Awards will be held on February 24th, 2016.
