June 2017

It’s summertime!  It’s time for a vacation.  The kids are out of school and that means they’ll be hanging around the house begging mom and dad to go and do stuff. Vegas may not be the spot for you K through 12th graders, but it is, of course, a popular spot for pool parties and a place to get into a bit of mischief. College-aged people will come to Vegas and try to emulate the commercials and the mystique of this town…usually without the success and panache for which they would hope. Sometimes these folks think that normal rules of society don't apply to this town...trust me though; drunk and disorderly and drunk driving will still get you thrown in jail. Families will come in, have a good time, but feel that there is less and less that the entire family can do on the Strip. (Actually, there are a lot of things that the family can do (especially this month,) but most tourists don't venture away from the casinos to find them.) We all want a vacation, and in many respects, things seem to be lightening up for a lot of people. It is time to get away and play.

Normally temperatures never reach 100 degrees until the month of June…but we’ve already hit that mark several times this year…looks like it’s going to be a hot one…  Yes, it is true, it is a dry heat; and yes, that does make it more tolerable. This is good and bad—it is as if you’re standing in a convection oven, rather than a sauna. Without lotion, the dry air will suck out any moisture that you may have in your body, and you will burn faster here than a day at the beach. Summer in Vegas is hot…pools and parties are the main tour de force for the season, and the entertainment usually brings a lot of wonderful surprises throughout the months ahead.

(An interesting note—especially for people getting married here in the summer, (lots of June brides here,) if you come from a humid climate, yes, the dry air will try and take away the moisture that’s in your body…conversely, your body will go into survival mode and do its best to retain any of the moisture that you have. The result is that your extremities will swell. If you bought the smallest, cutest, tightest shoes back home in anticipation of your wedding here…they will not fit, and if you do manage to get them on, you will be miserable. And just as your feet have swollen, so have your hands…ergo, your rings will not fit either. I have seen way too many brides and grooms working to the point of injury to try and get rings on. A little advice…get comfortable shoes, and make sure that your hands are lathered with lotion prior to coming down the aisle…it will insure that you can slide that ring over your swollen knuckles. Now consequently, this advice does not suggest in any way to stop drinking water…if you don’t drink water, you’ll get heat stroke and be in the hospital rather than the chapel on your wedding day—I’ve seen that too. Drink lots of water while in town and make sure that you’re getting a lot of electrolytes.)

In an effort to truly appreciate June, I had to ask myself, what is June?  Well it is a lot of things…including: National Aquarium Month, Candy Month, Dairy Month, Fight the Filthy Fly Month, Gay Pride Month, National Accordion Awareness Month, National Adopt a Cat Month, Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month, Rose Month, National Safety month, and Turkey Lovers Month.

And not that you’re going to find a card to go with any of these occasions, but on a daily basis:  The first is Dare Day and Flip a Coin Day. The second is National Bubba Day and National Rocky Road Day. The third is Repeat Day (I said "Repeat Day".) The third is Repeat Day (I said "Repeat Day",) and National Doughnut Day always the first Friday in June. The fourth is Applesauce Cake Day, Old Maid's Day, and Hug Your Cat Day. The fifth is World Environment Day.  The sixth is National Gardening Exercise Day- Get out and exercise with your plants, and National Yo-Yo Day. The seventh is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day. The eighth is Best Friends Day, as well as Name Your Poison Day. The ninth is Donald Duck Day, and the tenth is Iced Tea Day. The eleventh; National Corn on the Cob Day. (At this point I’m thinking to myself, “why did I start this list?” but then… “well, I’ve come this far…now I have to finish.”)  The twelfth; Red Rose Day. The thirteenth; Sewing Machine Day. The fourteenth; Flag Day. The fifteenth; Smile Power Day. The sixteenth; Fresh Veggies Day; followed by the seventeenth; Eat Your Vegetables Day. The eighteenth is big.  It is Go Fishing Day, International Panic Day, and National Splurge Day, and National Hollerin' Contest Day - third Saturday in June - Oh yeah!! And it’s World Juggler's Day - Saturday closest to June 17th The nineteenth; World Sauntering Day, and Father's Day - third Sunday. The twentieth is Ice Cream Soda Day, and the Summer Solstice. The 21st is Go Skate Day. The 22nd is National Chocolate Eclair Day. The 23rd is National Columnists Day and National Pink Day, and the 24th is Swim a Lap Day, and Take Your Dog to Work Day Friday after Father's Day. The 25th is Log Cabin Day and National Catfish Day. The 26th is Beautician's Day, Forgiveness Day. The 27th is Sun Glasses Day. The 28th is Paul Bunyan Day and Insurance Awareness Day - Now who do you think invented that!?! The 29th is Camera Day, Hug Holiday, and Waffle Iron Day. And finally, June 30th is Meteor Day.

Other major hits for the band include "Don't You Care," "Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)," and the pseudo-psychedelic "Susan." The group showed off their R&B roots on the jazz standard "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," their second-biggest hit.

Have you ever wondered how the unearthly sounds that you hear on a BOSTON album actually happen? See for yourself this summer at a live show on BOSTON's Hyper Space Tour! The band is currently planning four dozen shows in North America, including a Las Vegas stop at Park Theater at Monte Carlo Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 8 p.m. The band will be joined by support act Night Ranger. Unlike most bands at the time, all of BOSTON’s albums were conceived in a basement, written, produced and recorded by Tom Scholz, an MIT graduate who designed specialized equipment to capture the songs that he heard in his head.  Scholz created his music with the intention of playing it live, in real time with real musicians, making it one of the few bands in history to reproduce seemingly-impossible-to-perform productions on stage, without the use of prerecorded music or technical enhancements.

In conjunction with its newest album Heartworms released today, The Shins have been added to the entertainment lineup at The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Friday, June 23. Complete details are below. A high-res photo is available upon request. With multiple Grammy nominations under its belt, The Shins are a prominent force in the indie and alternative rock music world. The American band formed in Albuquerque in 1996 by James Mercer, lead singer and songwriter for the group. Its first hit song “New Slang” off its album Oh, Inverted World received critical acclaim and put The Shins on the map. The current lineup of the group is founding member Mercer, drummer Jon Sortland, guitarists Mark Watrous and Casey Foubert, bassist Yuuki Matthews and keyboardist Patti King. Heartworms, its fifth and newest album, was released today.

Jerry Seinfeld fans can catch the legendary comedian as he returns to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace for four nights of his critically-acclaimed stand-up comedy on June 17-18 and Sept. 8-9, 2017. All performances are presented jointly by AEG Live and Caesars Entertainment.  Entertainment icon Jerry Seinfeld’s comedy career took off after his first appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1981. Eight years later, he teamed up with fellow comedian Larry David to create what was to become the most successful comedy series in the history of television: Seinfeld. The show ran on NBC for nine seasons, winning numerous Emmy, Golden Globe and People’s Choice awards, and was named the greatest television show of all time in 2009 by TV Guide, and in 2012 was identified as the best sitcom ever in a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll.  Seinfeld has also starred in, written and produced movies (Comedian, Bee Movie), directed and produced a Broadway hit (Colin Quinn Long Story Short), and even wrote a best-selling book (Seinlanguage) and a children’s book (Halloween).  Seinfeld’s latest project is the critically-acclaimed web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, seen exclusively on Crackle and comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com, which has garnered over 100 million views, and which the New York Times describes as “impressively complex and artful” and Variety calls “a game changer.”
