March 2017

March has always been magnificent in Las Vegas.  This is one of the best times of the year to come to the city. In Vegas, just like in any other city in the country, Spring-cleaning will occur (both for ourselves and our entertainment,) and we’ll have more garage sales this month than at any other time of the year. Springtime in Las Vegas is a beautiful thing…the weather is perfect, and there are thousands of events, conventions, shows, and things to do. Things are bustling, and we love it.

Spring is just around the corner (the vernal equinox is on the 20th—balancing the day and night,) and awakening that spirit of renewal.

It seems that there is something innate that is built into the core of our being that senses this time of regeneration for the earth. There have always been celebrations in the spring honoring that spirit of rejuvenation. It is the end of winter. Spring is about re-birth, life after death, and a fresh start after a cold period in our lives. Spring brings us hope.

Students from all over the country will make Vegas their Spring Break destination during the next couple of months.  In March, there is St. Patrick’s Day; March Madness; NASCAR; pools are opening up, and there are even some bright spots in the entertainment industry.

March was named for the Roman God "Mars," and March contains a lot of interesting celebrations…March 3rd is I Want You to be Happy Day, and If Pets Had Thumbs Day. The 4th is Employee Appreciation Day, Holy Experiment Day, and Hug a GI Day. The 5th is Multiple Personality Day, the 8th, Be Nasty Day; the 9th, Panic Day; and the 11th Worship of Tools Day – us guys can relate. National Pi Day is the 14th - Why today? Because 3.14 is the value of Pi.  The 15th is the Ides of March, Dumbstruck Day, and Everything You Think is Wrong Day. The 16th is Everything You Do is Right Day; the 17th, Saint Patrick's Day; the 18th, Goddess of Fertility Day, Supreme Sacrifice Day; and the 20th is Extraterrestrial Abductions Day, and Proposal Day. The 22nd is National Goof Off Day; the 26th, Make Up Your Own Holiday Day; the 27th, National "Joe" Day; the 29th, Smoke and Mirrors Day; and finally, the 30th is I am in Control Day.

Springtime has been celebrated by every country and culture for as long as there have been countries and cultures. As the earth regenerates itself after the winter, we feel that sense of renewal as well. Something inside us just wants to bring life and freshness to our lives. We clean things out…repair, plant, and grow things.

In Ireland, It’s St. Patrick's Day! St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, and many people don't realize that the serpent was actually a metaphor for the early Pagan faiths of Ireland. St. Patrick brought Christianity to the Emerald Isle, and did such a good job of it that, for a while, he practically eliminated Paganism from the country…and now, in celebration; we drink!

Our modern day celebration centers around young adults making pilgrimages to warm climates to celebrate the sun, drink spirits, and engage in fertility rites and rituals….this is also known as Spring Break. And Las Vegas is one of the chosen destinations for these modern day festivals.

To further assist these festivals, Daylight Savings time begins on March 12th –spring forward.

Local Parrotheads won't want to miss their chance to soak in the full Margaritaville experience.

Turning Margaritaville into a musical has been an idea for quite a while but now it's gearing up to make its debut. "Escape to Margaritaville" will have its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse, in La Jolla, Calif., in May 2017. After that, the musical will make a pre-Broadway stop in New Orleans, Houston and Chicago. The play will feature the music and lifestyle of Jimmy Buffett, from an original story, and includes both new songs and the most-loved Buffett classics. Speaking of Buffett classics, the most famous of them all, "Margaritaville" has been inducted into the 2016 Grammy Hall of Fame for its cultural and historic significance. Another milestone this year is the 40th anniversary of the 1977 album Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes, which featured the debut of “Margaritaville.” Other iconic songs from that record are regularly performed on tour as requested by the fans, such as the title track, “Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes,” “Lovely Cruise,” and “Banana Republics.”

Nievera's second LP, 1984's “The Best Gift,” was also certified platinum. In 1998, Nievera recorded “Forever,” which became the second best-selling album ever in the Philippines. Social Distortion is bringing their brand of rock ‘n’ roll for two nights to the House of Blues Las Vegas on March 3 & 4, 2017.  Over the past 30 years, the punk godfathers in the band have all but trademarked their sound, a brand of hard rockabilly/punk that’s cut with the melodic, road-tested lyrics of front man Mike Ness. Their searing guitars and a locomotive rhythm section sound as alive today as they did in ‘82, as do Ness’ hard-luck tales of love, loss and lessons learned.  Now in their fourth decade, Ness and Social Distortion have officially done one of the most non-punk things possible: They’ve failed to burn out.

Rock legends George Thorogood & The Destroyers are returning to Las Vegas for a special performance at the Pearl Concert Theater inside Palms Casino Resort on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 8 p.m. It’s that moment when the house lights go down and the audience erupts: a drumbeat punches through the darkness, and the stage lights – almost blindingly bright at first – reveal a killer band ready to unleash a catalog of classic hits like none other. That familiar snarl of a slide guitar rips open the room, and you know you’re about to experience a bad-to-the-bone icon at his very best. George Thorogood And The Destroyers are throwing a Rock Party for 2017 and you’re invited.

Country superstar Chris Stapleton is returning to Las Vegas, with special guest Maren Morris, for a special performance at the Pearl Concert Theater inside Palms Casino Resort on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 8 p.m.  Renowned and respected in Nashville, Chris Stapleton has co-written six number one hits for some of country music’s biggest stars and has continually worked as an in-demand session musician, providing masterful backup vocals and guitar work to countless pieces of music.

Inspired by some of the world’s most iconic venues, The Chelsea is a 40,000 square-foot transformable space featuring remnant brick tiling, an eclectic collection of stage production props, a vintage lobby bar, private VIP opera boxes and a memorable grand staircase complete with a dramatic chandelier. The venue’s stage attracts some of today’s hottest acts.

Dierks Bentley

Friday, March 3 and Saturday, 4

Country artist Dierks Bentley grew up in a non-musical family in Phoenix, Arizona, but as an avid fan of country music, Bentley moved to Nashville at the ripe age of 19. After playing various gigs around the city, Capitol Records signed him, and he released his self-titled debut, Dierks Bentley, in 2003, which included “What Was I Thinkin’?” a song that put him on the map as a country musician. From then on, Bentley released album after album, hit song after hit song, and racked up numerous amounts of Grammy, American Country Music, and Country Music Association award nominations. Bentley also has songs with various country music artists, including Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild, Tim O’Brien, Sam Bush, and Kacey Musgraves. Bentley’s album Riser, released in 2014, debuted at number one on Billboard’s country charts and generated three major hit songs: “I Hold On,” “Drunk on a Plane,” and “Say You Do.” His latest hit song, “Somewhere on a Beach”, also topped Billboard’s country charts when it was first released in May of this year.

Death Cab for Cutie

Friday, March 17

Indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie began as a small-time solo project of founding member Ben Gibbard and eventually developed into a Grammy-nominated band. The band, known for their use of unconventional instrumentation, made their studio debut in 1998 with Something About Airplanes which was positively received in the indie music industry. During the summer of 2005, the band released Plans which debuted at number four on the Billboard charts, where it remained for nearly one year. The album also achieved platinum status with its hit songs “Soul Meets Body” and “I Will Follow You into the Dark.” The band began as a quartet but ultimately became the trio it is today with Gibbard and founding member and bassist Nick Harmer as well as drummer Jason McGerr. Their eighth and latest album, Kintsugi, was released in 2015 and includes their newest hit song “Black Sun.”

Maluma

Friday, March 24

At twenty-two years of age, Maluma has quickly become one of Latin music’s top youth icons. Born Juan Luis Londoño, Maluma formulated his name from the first two letters of the names of his mother, father and sister. His hits “La Temperatura,” “Obsesión,” and “Pasarla Bien”, to name a few, put him on the map as a top Latin artist. Maluma received an MTV Millennial Award in 2014 for Colombian Artist of the Year and also hosted the 2014 Nickelodeon Colombia Kids’ Choice Awards, winning Best Colombian Artist or Group. In 2015, the Latin Grammy nominated artist released his latest album Pretty Boy Dirty Boy and within his first year in the American market has placed four number one songs on Billboard's Latin Songs chart.

Bastille

Friday, April 14

Since 2010, London’s Bastille has combined glossy ‘80s synth pop and arena-friendly choruses by blending rock, rhythm and blues and dance music. Singer and songwriter Dan Smith joined forces with Chris Wood, William Farquarson, and Kyle Simmons to form Bastille, drawing inspiration from Smith’s birthday—Bastille Day. The group’s breakthrough in the music industry came when “Pompeii” reached number 2 on the U.K. charts in February 2013. Shortly after, Bad Blood was released and sold over two million copies, helping the group earn a 2014 Brit Award for Best Breakthrough Act, as well as nominations for British Album of the Year, British Single of the Year, and British Group. Bastille’s most recent album, Wild World, debuted September 2016, featuring hit single “Good Grief.”

Boulevard Pool

Boulevard Pool is a multilevel pool experience by day and an intimate outdoor concert venue with unobstructed sightlines of The Strip by night.

Flogging Molly

Thursday, March 16

Seven-piece band Flogging Molly can best be described as a new take on traditional Irish music and punk rock. The band, founded in Los Angeles, formed when Dublin native Dave King joined with fiddle player Bridget Regan, guitarist Dennis Casey, accordion player and former professional skateboarder Matt Hensley, bassist Nathen Maxwell, drummer George Schwindt and mandolinist Bob Schmidt. Their energizing performances aided in the release of their debut hit song ‘Swagger’ in March 2000 followed by the release of their hit album Drunken Lullabies two years later. Their latest album, Speed of Darkness, features their hit song ‘Saints & Sinners’ as well as the song ‘Speed of Darkness’ named after the album itself.

On Friday, March 24, the always witty Vince Gill and the reliably wry Lyle Lovett will reunite for a one-night-only performance at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas as part of their “Songs and Stories” national tour, kicking off in March 2017 after the duo teamed up for a series of concerts in 2015 and 2016 that left fans begging for more.  Each show will be a series of intimate solo and duo performances, during which the artists will serve as their own accompanists.

The 2017 Monster Jam World Finals® XVIII will take place March 23-25, 2017 at Sam Boyd Stadium.  Last year, more than 57,000 fans with attendees from 15 different countries and all 50 states witnessed the greatest Monster Jam truck racing and freestyle competition in the history of the sport. Fans can get up-close-and-personal with the Monster Jam trucks and drivers as they are granted more fan access to the stars of the show than any other live event.  Monster Jam competitors are trained at Monster Jam University in mastering the skills of driving Monster Jam trucks.  Approximately 12 feet tall and about 12 feet wide, Monster Jam trucks are custom-designed machines that sit atop 66-inch-tall tires and weigh a minimum of 10,000 pounds. Built for short, high-powered bursts of speed, Monster Jam trucks generate 1,500 to 2,000 horsepower and are capable of speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Monster Jam trucks can fly up to125 to 130 feet (a distance greater than 14 cars side by side) and up to 35 feet in the air.

There will be a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Downtown Las Vegas, and every Pub in the city will put on some sort of Irish celebration.

…In addition, remember that clocks spring forward March 12th.

The “Pin Up” show at the Stratosphere Showroom will be closing on Saturday, March 4. The “World’s Greatest Rock Show” will open there on June 4 with 9:30. It will be a class-rock tribute production with singers and musicians portraying 10 famous rock bands. “Pin-up” just celebrated its four-year anniversary.

There was a dance teacher who talked of a very old dance called the Politician. "All you have to do" she told her class "is take three steps forward, two steps backward, then
side-step, side-step and turn around."
